A Message from the Chairman
Did you know that a recent article
ranks Mathematician as the top job? Moreover, Mathematician, Actuary, and Statistician have been in the top 10 for many years in the ranking on careercast. We have a world class mathematics program and offer many varied courses in different subjects. Some of the content areas we focus on are Actuarial Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics.

Actuarial mathematics is the study of risk and uncertainty in a financial setting, and is
useful in all areas of business. The actuarial mathematics courses at UNO are specifically designed to help you pass the tests
(see the Society of Actuaries homepage) to become an actuary.

The mathematics of the financial impact of risk and uncertainty

Applying math to real world problems in a variety of industries

Industrial and Applied Mathematics
is a broad term used to describe many areas of mathematics. In your industrial and applied mathematics courses at UNO, you will study
differential equations, mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, and optimization. The goal is to provide a breadth of training
that will help you in many applied settings.

Mathematics underlies all areas of modern life. Carl Frederick Gauss referred to it as "The Queen of Sciences." Galileo Galilei said, "The universe cannot be read until we have learned the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written in mathematical language, and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which means it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word. Without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth." No matter what your field is, you will find pure mathematics courses at UNO of interest to you.

A Universal Language

Collecting, analyzing, and explaining all types of data

Statistics includes the study of data in all of its many forms. While taking statistics courses at UNO, you will learn practical methods
for analyzing data, as well as the theoretical ideas behind these methods.

We have more than just an undergraduate program. The Department of Mathematics at UNO offers MS and PhD (under the ENAS program)
degrees.

The Department has a computer lab in Math Building 200 available to students and faculty.
The Math Tutor Center helps students maximize their
academic potential. The UNO Library has nearly one million volumes, and good journal and ejournal holdings.
Students participate in seminars, research and teaching. Our students and faculty come from
many parts of the world, with a wide variety of races, religions, and countries represented.

New Orleans is one of the most interesting cities in the world with a unique mix of cultures.
World class food, music, and festivals abound. Our program provides an excellent introduction
to the careers mentioned above, and we welcome your interest in the UNO Department of Mathematics.
